Regulation and compliance

The Regulation and Compliance programme of the Institute is charged with the responsibility of setting and enforcing standards across the continuum of cancer care. This includes developing standards for the establishment of hospitals, vocational treatment and care centres for cancer and ensuring that they adhere to external rules and internal controls to safeguard the delivery of high quality cancer care. The programme also identifies risks that cancer centres and institutions face and advises on how to avoid or address them.

Other key responsibilities under this mandate include:

  • Designation of Cancer Centres
  • Definition of service norms for Cancer Centres
  • Development of guidelines and protocols to guide on clinical management
  • Quality Assurance
  • Occupational Health and Safety
  • Waste management
  • Patient Safety

Capacity Building

The Cancer Prevention and Care Spectrum is charged with the responsibility of coordinating the provision of training on cancer prevention and control in collaboration with stakeholders. The programme provides technical assistance to other directorates within the Institute in the development of training guidelines, curriculum and protocols for cancer prevention and control. It also collaborates with training institutions to build capacity of the health system for cancer prevention and control while liaising with relevant bodies to regulate training institutions offering cancer –related training. The programme also conducts continuous professional development for in-service cancer-care givers.

As the country’s lead institution for cancer prevention and control, NCI-Kenya advises the Cabinet Secretary for Health, on policy matters relating to the prevention, treatment and control of cancer. This is through a systematic analysis of all cancer prevention and control activities undertaken by various stakeholders to determine the gaps and make recommendations on the investment priorities for the country.
