The Cancer Prevention and Control Act, No. 15 of 2012 spells out 5 specific functions of the National Cancer Institute of Kenya (NCI-K) under Section 5 on cancer data as follows:
collect, analyze and disseminate all data useful in the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of cancer;
collect, catalogue, store and disseminate the results of cancer research undertaken in any country for the use of any person involved in cancer research;
ensure that accurate figures of persons with cancer are obtained in the country for purposes of planning
provide access to available information and technical assistance to all institutions, associations and organizations concerned with the welfare and treatment of persons with cancer
encourage and participate in the provision of training on cancer prevention and control
In order to deliver on these responsibilities as required by the law, the institute is thus mandated to maintain a Cancer Registry (PART III, Section 20 , 21 and 22 of the Act) containing:
Individual level Cancer Patient data - Incidence, Prevalence, Type, Trends, Location e.t.c
Institutions, Associations & Organizations providing cancer services
Catalogue & Dissemination of cancer research undertaken in any country (Sec 5 - f)
It is a law requirement to notify the institute within 60 days of cancer diagnosis failure to which a fine not exceeding two hundred thousand shillings, imprisonment for a term, not exceeding two years or both may be preferred to any person contravening this law .
The notification format will be as prescribed by the National Cancer Institute of Kenya.
